Mid winter heaven

Chrisa, I just wanted to say a HUGE thank you for the yummy pie. I've just enjoyed the first slice with a mug of earl grey wearing my PJ's that had been pre-warmed up of the burner. I'm now pie eyed with a belly full.

"Down in the valley people are caught up in a world ruled by custom and by the sort of pressures that turn even art and faith into merchandise. All too often they lead lives of quiet desperation in a desert of selfishness and apathy...........

..........No, I said to my self, no world could ever be beautiful where the emotions of fear and enthusiasm only terrify the majority of people............

........Too many of them are concerned only with sparing themselves and their own feelings"

Tina Modotti - icon for the youth?

Last week was reading the blog of a girl a good 15 years younger than me who had listed Tina Modotti as an icon of hers. As Tina was a big favorite of mine in my late teens, it got me thinking: what makes us drawn to certain people at certain times. I dug out my 1993 edition of Margaret Hooks biog to try and remember what the appeal had been....really hoping my teen self had deeper reasons than she looks good in pictures. I'm pleased to report just a skim through was enough to bring it all back. 'A kaleidoscope of contradictions', 'A brooding melancholic and search soul.' 'Single minded and at times self serving individual.' This definitely would have chimed with my youthful self.

I was also embarrassed to remember how, at the time, I'd pictured myself growing into some huge romantic figure, a muse to creative greats - for whom my beauty inspired brilliance. UM!?!
I might turn the idea into a series of Teen Icons posts.....Siobhan Fahey, Buster Keaton, Winona Rider (in her Johnnie Depp days,) Courtney Love, Dorothy Parker??? Will have a ponder over that one, it might be a more fruitful move to focus on looking out new inspirational figures for this part of my life.
PS - Sorry if my childlike treatment of the images takes away some the photo's sensuality away! It's a grey Tuesday night and I wanted some fun.

“She generally gave herself very good advice, (though she very seldom followed it)”

“I can't go back to yesterday - because I was a different person then”

“The rule is, jam tomorrow and jam yesterday - but never jam today.”
“Will you, won't you, will you, won't you, will you join the dance?”

“I can't explain myself, I'm afraid, because I'm not myself, you see”

“Sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.”

“He was part of my dream, of course - but then I was part of his dream too.”

“If you don't know where you are going, any road will get you there.”

“That's the reason they're called lessons, because they lesson from day to day.”
